On May 19, Slovak Ambassador to Washington Peter Kmec was honored at a farewell reception hosted by FOS Treasurer Dr. Eva Jenkins and her husband Robert. The event was held at their home in Great Falls with 40 guests attending, including members of FOS and the Slovak American Society of Washington. The guests enjoyed American BBQ with a “touch of Slovakia” on the menu. During the event, FOS Vice Chairman Ken Bombara presented Ambassador Kmec with an elegant tray featuring the American flag motif. He wished Ambassador Kmec and his wife Monika, who were away in Europe on that date, a great future success.

FOS Founding Chairman Ambassador Ted Russell (Ret.) then presented Ambassador Kmec with the FOS Medal of Honor for his distinguished service in building ties of Slovak-American cooperation and friendship. Ambassador Kmec responded by discussing some of his objectives in Washington, including his time as Slovak Deputy Chief of Mission, when he played a key role in gaining US Senate support for Slovakia’s 2004 NATO membership bid. He also talked about his successful efforts as Ambassador to increase commercial, political, and military security ties between Slovakia and the USA, which involved extensive travels across the country.
