Friends of Slovakia is pleased to invite you to participate in an online discussion featuring Dr. Roman Hlatky, Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of North Texas. Dr. Hlatky will present his research findings regarding the developments in Slovakia’s public life in 2024.

Following the 2024 elections in Slovakia, the government has undertaken further measures to increase its political influence over independent state institutions, curtail the ability of the opposition to effectively participate in policymaking and legislation, reduce the independence of Slovakia’s cultural institutions, and limit the ability of the civic sector to engage in policymaking while also actively disparaging Slovakia’s nongovernmental organizations. The restructuring of Slovakia’s public television and radio broadcasters gave the government significant control over these media outlets, and several government representatives continue to maintain hostile relationships with various private media organizations. The government’s controversial amendment to the Criminal Code severely limited the ability of the judicial system to prosecute corruption and maintain the rule of law effectively, and anti-corruption efforts are likely to experience setbacks with the dissolution of several institutions dedicated to fighting corruption.
