Dr. Tomáš Cihlář, an internationally recognized Czech biochemist, delivered the Annual Czech and Slovak Freedom Lecture on November 18, 2020. His lecture was entitled “The Role of Czech and International Scientists in the Fight Against the Pandemic” and focused on the COVID-19 pandemic and global efforts to combat it.

Dr. Tomáš Cihlář is an internationally recognized Czech biochemist and a senior scientist with 25+ years of experience in virology. He is known for his role in developing remedesivir, a broad-spectrum antiviral medication, which was authorized for emergency use to treat COVID-19 in numerous countries during the pandemic. A specialist in virology, he holds the positions of Senior Director, Biology, and Vice-President at Gilead Sciences in the United States.
